Abstract

This article analyzes the current situation related to the increase in the prevalence of chronic illnesses in the country. It also addresses the problems that face family caregivers of people with chronic illnesses who need to be cared for at home. Most of these family members do not expect to be caregivers and receive little support from health care professionals. They also face difficult familiar and social situations, especially considering most are women with additional responsibilities, such as looking after children or working outside home. Health care teams, and nurses in particular, have given little attention to informal care giving as an area of their concern. The care of caregivers is an ethical responsibility of the nursing profession. They can not only assure quality care for those who depend upon them but reduce the burden felt by the family caregiver through the enhancement of self care.
