Abstract

This article presents a review of the concept of holism, and how this has been introduced in health in the Western world. From this point of view, it searches to uncover the real meaning of holism in health, and how it has evolved within the philosophy of care. A review of several studies on this issue was conducted, focusing on Roger's Nursing Mode/ "Human Being Unit" and the patterns of knowledge proposed by Carper (1978, citada en Rivera, 2003). Using this review, the applicability of this concept in nursing care was evaluated, and its development with the use of complementary therapies
