Abstract

The mortuary photography, or photography of the deceased, was a common practice since the appearance of the daguerreotype in the middle of 19th Century until the first decades of the 20th Century. This article tries to explain why Chis custom, not only accepted but also well spread at least in the western world for more than sixty years, is today interpreted like a macabre practice.
